United Way Presents Awards and Announces New Officers at Annual Dinner
United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) presented several awards for outstanding support and announced its 2008-2009 board of directors at the charity’s annual dinner this month in Harrisburg.
McNees, Wallace & Nurick LLC recently received an award from United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) for service to the charity.
“Each year we present the Excellence in Leadership Award to an organization who has demonstrated exemplary support of our United Way,” said Joseph M. Capita, UWCR president and CEO. “We are honored McNees, Wallace & Nurick sees our United Way as a significant way the firm can demonstrate its caring in our community.”
McNees, Wallace & Nurick received the Excellence in Leadership Award at UWCR’s annual dinner in Harrisburg for the following reasons:
- Several company employees hold volunteer roles within UWCR, including: Brian Jackson, Esq., partner, who is on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and who chairs the Nominating Committee. Seventeen McNees, Wallace & Nurick employees belong to UWCR’s Women’s Leadership Network and 13 employees belong to the Bridges Society, a network of donors age 45 and under. Representatives from the firm also serve on UWCR’s fund distribution panel and Volunteer Center Advisory Committee.
- McNees, Wallace & Nurick provides human resource training for UWCR staff members at no charge.
- McNees, Wallace & Nurick provides financial support for special initiatives. The firm helps sponsor UWCR’s Women’s Leadership Network and has supported United Way’s Annual Barn Party, which raises funds for the Volunteer Center.
- Over the last four years the firm’s campaign has nearly doubled growing from $44,000 to $82,000. In addition the number of leadership givers, donors contributing $1,000 or more to the campaign, has grown from 21 to 42.
Twenty-one organizations received the 2007 Pillar Award for donating $100,000 or more in combined employee and corporate gifts to the fundraising campaign. Those organizations are: Capital BlueCross; Gannett Fleming, Inc.; Giant Food Stores; Hersha Group; The Hershey Company; Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company; Highmark Blue Shield; Nationwide Insurance; Naval Support Activity – Mechanicsburg; The Patriot-News; Penn National Insurance; Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine; PinnacleHealth System; PPL Electric Utilities; Reynolds Construction Management, Inc.; Rite Aid Corporation; State Employee Combined Appeal; Three Mile Island Generating Station; Tyco Electronics Corporation; UPS ; and, U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks.
UWCR also welcomed its 2008-2009 officers and new board members.
Michael J. Breslin of Harrisburg, senior vice president for Northwestern Human Services, will continue for another year as UWCR’s chairman of the Board.

- Secretary/Treasurer Steven M. Hoffman of Harrisburg, managing partner, KPMG LLP;
- Vice Chair of Campaign Jonathan Vipond, III of Mechanicsburg, shareholder, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC;
- Vice Chair of Communications and Marketing Rick A. Kelly of Hershey, director of crisis communications, Triad Strategies;
- Vice Chair of Community Impact Committee Jeannine D. Peterson of Harrisburg, president and CEO, Hamilton Health Center;
- Vice Chair of Labor Participation Darryl R. Brown Sr., of Harrisburg, duplicating supervisor, Bureau of Support Services, Department of the Auditor General, Local 2162, AFSCME; and
- Vice Chair of the Tocqueville Society, Robert S. Jones of Camp Hill, president, Capital Division, Fulton Bank.
New board members serving a three-year term are: Kenneth C. Black of Enola, vice president, tax, Rite Aid Corporation; Karen F. Snider of Mechanicsburg, president, Susquehanna Consulting and Financial Group; John A. Kirkpatrick of Wormleysburg, editor and publisher, The Patriot-News; Jessica E. Meyers of Harrisburg, president and CEO, JEM Group, LLC; and Kenneth N. Hugendubler of Mechanicsburg, partner, bmc.
Outgoing board members are Lawrence B. Abrams, III, Esq., partner, Rhoads & Sinon; George F. Grode, retired executive vice president, Highmark Blue Shield, Paul Jackson, vice president, underwriting, HealthAmerica/Health Assurance; and Karen Rugen, senior vice president, corporate communications, Rite Aid Corporation.
