Bridges Society

craig-flemmensUnited Way of the Capital Region’s (UWCR) Bridges Society connects the next generation of diverse leaders through giving and volunteering.

Bridges members believe in and support UWCR’s three step method of identifying needs in the community, finding the programs and services that are addressing those needs, and directing funding to those programs and services through UWCR’s volunteer-driven allocations process.

Membership in the Bridges Society is ideally suited to donors under age 46 who make a minimum gift of $500 to UWCR.

Bridges currently has more than 377 members who donated more $438,000 to UWCR in 2010!

What’s happening in 2011?

Bridges continues to work with UWCR to make our community a better place to live, work and raise families.

The 2011 Steering Committee encourages you to be more involved this year, whether it’s through a networking event or a volunteering project. If you can’t make any of the scheduled events, you can become a Bridges Society Champion by helping UWCR staff set up a smaller event or project for Bridges Society members and friends at your workplace. See below for more details.

Here are just a few ways to keep up with the latest Bridges news and events:

Volunteering

Earlier in the year, more than 55 volunteers and Bridges members chaperoned 67 third-grade children from Downey Elementary School on field trips at Barnes and Noble book store in Camp Hill.

The Bridges Society adopted Downey Elementary School to help improve students’ literacy skills. Members also have the opportunity to read to children during or after school, as well as collect books for classroom libraries.

Bridges members also helped out with UWCR’s Ninth Annual Youth Day of Caring on April 15.  For the second year in a row, YDOC was held in the South Allison Hill neighborhood of Harrisburg.  More than 250 high school students from nine area high schools participated, along with more than 100 adult volunteers. Bridges Society members served as project leaders, chaperones and other volunteers for 22 city beautification projects.

Check out a YDOC video put together by Messiah College students June Lathrop and Matthew Elton.

Check out pictures from both volunteer events in our Photo Gallery.

If you are interested in volunteering through the Bridges Society, please fill out the Volunteer Questionnaire form. You will then be contacted about upcoming volunteer opportunities!
