Volunteer Companion - An East Shore agency needs volunteer companions for individuals who are terminally ill. Duties are varied and could include helping patient caregivers with errands, sitting with patients and providing support. This opportunity is available during flexible daytime, evening and weekend hours. Applications must be reliable, compassionate, and comfortable working with individuals with terminal illnesses. Training and ongoing support are provided.

Weekend Volunteer Opportunity - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to cover four-hour weekend shifts at a medical facility. Volunteer duties include answering the phone, keeping common areas straightened, stocking supplies and interacting with families of sick children. Interested volunteers must be compassionate and have good people and listening skills. Training is required and provided by the agency.

Friendly Visitors/Shoppers - An East Shore agency needs volunteers for friendly visiting and/or food shopping for homebound seniors residing on both the East and West shores. This opportunity offers extremely flexible scheduling and tasks can be done during daytime, evening or weekend hours. Interested volunteers should be dependable, friendly and enjoy interacting with senior citizens. Training and ongoing support are provided.

Special Events Planner - If you love dogs and are interested in helping to plan an event, this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Volunteers are needed to assist in developing PawsAbilities 2010, the premiere event held at the Farm Show Complex. The event will be held on March 13th and 14th, 2010 so we need to get plans underway now.

Delivery Helper - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to assist drivers making multiple stops at libraries. Duties include handling and sorting materials. Volunteers must be physically fit and able to lift 25 pounds and climb in and out of the vehicle. This opportunity is available Monday, Wednesday and Fridays during regular business hours.

Receptionist - A busy East Shore agency needs volunteers to help answer the phones. This opportunity is available Monday through Friday between 8 am – 5 pm. Coverage can be provided in shifts. Interested candidates should be articulate, friendly and enjoy interacting with clients and the public on the telephone.

Gift Shop Cashier - A West Shore facility needs volunteers to work in the gift shop. Volunteer duties include stocking shelves, collecting money, greeting and waiting on customers. This opportunity is available on Saturdays and Sundays. Interested volunteers should be personable and enjoy interacting with the public. The facility requires a PPD (tuberculosis test) and will provide it free of charge to all volunteers.

Fundraising Walk Committee - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to help plan and implement a fundraising walk on April 25, 2010. The committee will be responsible for soliciting sponsors, recruiting walkers and event logistics. Access to transportation is helpful, but not required as committee members may participate in meetings via phone.

Hospice Volunteers - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to provide support and assistance to families served by a hospice. Volunteer opportunities are varied and most offer very flexible scheduling. Interested volunteers should have a kind heart and be comfortable with end-of-life issues. Volunteers must also undergo a background check provided by the agency, attend training in April, and have a current PPD test.

Drivers - An East Shore agency needs drivers on the first and third Wednesdays of the month to drive blind and/or visually impaired individuals to support groups in the Harrisburg area. This opportunity requires 3-4 hours of time. Interested volunteers should be friendly, outgoing and have reliable transportation. Mileage reimbursement is available if needed.

Mentors - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to mentor youth, ages 11-16, in conflict resolution skills on Wednesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. Training and ongoing support are provided. Interested volunteers should enjoy working with youth and be willing to obtain child abuse clearances and a background check (paid for by the agency).

Bowling Special Event - An area agency needs day-of-event volunteers for bowling fundraisers throughout the month of March. Volunteers perform various duties including event set-up and clean-up, selling raffle tickets, collecting information from participants and more. These opportunities are available in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg and Carlisle during weekend hours and are suitable for individuals or groups. Interested volunteers should be friendly, outgoing and reliable.

Office Event Volunteers - An East Shore agency needs 1-2 volunteers to assist in event preparation. Duties are varied and include collating packets, folding t-shirts, assembling materials needed and more. This opportunity is available Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Interested volunteers should be flexible and enjoy working on special events.

Special Event Auction - A West Shore agency needs volunteers to help with a fundraising auction scheduled for late September. Volunteer duties include soliciting auction items, assembling gift baskets and helping with set-up on the day of the event. Interested volunteers should be creative and comfortable asking for donations.

HIV/AIDS Educators - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to help provide HIV prevention services to the most vulnerable populations in our community. Volunteers are needed monthly to assemble kits for distribution throughout the region. This opportunity is available the first Thursday of every month from 6-8 p.m. Instruction and refreshments will be provided.

Overnight Shelter Volunteers - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to staff the overnight shelter during winter months. Volunteer duties include greeting clients and ensuring that check-out runs smoothly in the morning. This opportunity is available from 8 pm through 7 am. Interested volunteers must be comfortable working with homeless clients, including those with some level of mental disease and/or condition. Training and ongoing support are provided. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals or couples.

Office/Clerical Volunteer - A West Shore agency needs office assistance for a few hours per week. This opportunity is available Monday through Friday during regular business hours with flexible scheduling. Volunteer duties include filing, assisting with mailings and data entry. Interested volunteers should be friendly and comfortable working in a friendly environment that provides services for children and adults with special needs.

Tutors - An area agency needs tutors and classroom aids. This opportunity is extremely flexible and offers both East and West Shore locations as well as daytime and evening hours. Interested volunteers should be friendly, patient and enjoy working with adult learners, many of whom are ESL students. Training and ongoing support are provided.

Baseball Helper - An East Shore team needs a volunteer to help with baseball field set—up and maintenance. This volunteer would put the line down and drag the field prior to each game and help out with other field maintenance activities. This opportunity is available from March 31 through May 7 from 1-3 p.m. in the Harrisburg area. Interested volunteers should be reliable and enjoy interacting with young athletes.

Animal Lovers - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to help prepare horses for riding lessons for people with disabilities as well as various farm chores. This opportunity has daytime, evening and weekend opportunities. Interested individuals should be able to work around all sorts of animals and comfortable interacting with children and adults with disabilities.

Gardeners - An East Shore agency needs volunteer gardeners to help with planting, weeding, deadheading and trimming roses and general garden clean-up. This opportunity is available Wednesday mornings from 9:30 am – noon. Other dates and times are available and will be provided upon request. Interested volunteers should enjoy being outdoors and gardening, and be able to take direction from the head gardeners. Volunteers will be asked to bring their own gardening/work gloves.

Camp Volunteers - An area agency needs volunteers who help with a day camp in Harrisburg. This opportunity is available August 9-13, August 16-20 or August 23-27. Interested volunteers should be friendly, outgoing, and comfortable interacting with campers with disabilities. Volunteers must be 16 or older and may elect to do one week or all three weeks. Training is provided.

Meal Packers - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to help package meals that are distributed to homebound senior citizens. This opportunity is available three days per week during regular business hours. Interested volunteers should enjoy working with other volunteers and comfortable working in a kitchen setting.

Youth Conflict Resolution Mentors - An East Shore agency needs volunteers to mentor youth in conflict resolution skills to help reduce community violence. This opportunity is available on Wednesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. Training, orientation and ongoing support are provided. Interested adults should be dependable, enjoy working with youth, and be willing to obtain criminal background check and child abuse clearances.
