Meet Shane

Real Impact Through Pilot Projects

Shane lives in Susquehanna Township with his grandparents who he affectionately calls Gigi and Poppy. Like many five-year-old children, Shane loves to play, read books and create science projects.

In the fall of 2019, he will enter kindergarten at Sara Lindemuth/Anna Carter Primary School. To help him prepare socially and academically, Shane attends workshops through Ready for School, Ready to Succeed, a community pilot project to increase school readiness.

“Transitions are difficult for Shane,” his grandmother says. “He struggles with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and anxiety.”

Shane has lived with his grandparents since he was two, following the death of his mother. His father is incarcerated.

When Shane started attending workshops last fall, he was shy and nervous. Now, he enters the classroom with confidence. He has made several new friends who will join him in kindergarten.

“We want to do everything we can to prepare Shane for kindergarten,” his grandmother adds. “Thanks to this program, he’s excited to start school.”
