United Way Announces Annual Fundraising Goal
United Way of the Capital Region has announced its 2020 fundraising goal of $8.8 million to benefit the community during these unprecedented times of demand for services.
“Now more than ever, our community needs United Way,” said Timothy B. Fatzinger, United Way of the Capital Region president and CEO. “We supported our community during the crisis phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and now we are helping families get back on track through our proven programs.”
When COVID-19 first surfaced in our region, United Way of the Capital Region connected individuals in need to resources through 211, a nonemergency line available 24/7. Calls doubled during March and April. United Way also launched a basic needs fund to help its nonprofit partners provide basic needs services to area residents. United Way of the Capital Region also partnered with The Foundation for Enhancing Communities to raise $206,671 for 78 nonprofit organizations in the greater central Pennsylvania area.
Now, United Way is helping individuals and families gain self-sufficiency through its access to health care, school readiness and workforce development pilot projects as well as basic needs support. Since launching the pilot projects in 2017, the projects are showing tangible results of improving the lives of our friends and neighbors.
“We are proud to have successful programs in place to help our community when it needs a strong support system,” said Fatzinger. “At the same, we are asking individuals with the capacity to give to support our work as this is the most crucial campaign our organization has faced since the Great Depression.”
Leading the fundraising efforts are Campaign Chair John Campbell, director of business owner engagement for M&T Bank Wilmington Trust and Campaign Vice Chair Jim Mooney, president & CEO of Enginuity.
“We are fortunate to have two outstanding leaders working together for United Way,” added Fatzinger. “John and Jim are passionate about moving our community forward and believe United Way can help make that happen.”
This year, donors who give $182 or more to United Way’s campaign are eligible to win one of four prizes: a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, donated by Turner Automotive; a $1,500 getaway courtesy of 1 AAA Central Penn; $1,500 in groceries donated by Giant Food Stores; and a $1,000 VISA gift card courtesy of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals.
