MIYP Client Story – Meet Cam
Tax Assistance Helps Local Man as He Rebuilds His Life
Cam, of Cumberland County, is a college junior who balances his classes, work and community volunteerism as he rebuilds his life after serving 12 years in prison.
Cam entered the criminal justice system as a young man remorseful of his actions and determined to become the best version of himself. While incarcerated, he took college courses which have transferred to Shippensburg University.
“I want to be a social worker to help others as they reenter society,” Cam says. “I love my classes and work really hard to do well.”
During his time in prison, Cam filed his taxes. This year marked the first time in more than a decade where sources of income from his job came into play. He didn’t want to make a mistake and found help through United Way’s Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program at the Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle.
“The volunteers have been so kind to me,” Cam adds. “I am very grateful for the help.”
MIYP uses trained volunteers to prepare taxes for low- to moderate-income working families in the Capital Region at no cost.
The program aims to increase use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The EITC is a tax credit offered by the federal government to supplement wages for low-income workers.
