Labor Liaison & Community Impact Manager

The Labor Liaison & Community Impact Manager is responsible for connecting and engaging labor with the community and encouraging partnership between the United Way of the Capital Region and the labor community.

Responsibilities include volunteer coordination, providing assistance to workers and their families, building union volunteer community leaders, supporting United Way fundraising efforts and community advocacy in the areas of health, education, school readiness and basic needs.

Work Schedule: Full-Time exempt position that may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Essential Functions:

Volunteer Coordination

  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment, training and mobilization.
  • Cultivate collaborative efforts between union and community organizations.
  • Facilitate labor and working family volunteerism and representation in community organizations.
  • Develop strategic community service projects that help forward the mission of United Way.
  • Provide opportunities and recognition to thank Union members and working families for volunteering.

Provide Assistance to Workers and Their Families

  • Establish union-based programs to educate and help workers, their families, and retirees access information and programs available in the community.
  • Provide health and human service connections and supports to dislocated workers and/or workers on strike/lockout.

Build Union Volunteer Community Leaders

  • Help support the work of the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council’s Community Services Committee and the AFL-CIO Community Services efforts. This includes but is not limited to community outreach opportunities, community volunteering, training community labor leaders and providing recognition for outstanding volunteer service.
  • Recruit, train and make connections for union volunteers to serve in community leadership roles (like UCAN training).
  • Track union volunteer activities, when information is made available, within our community.
  • Promote leadership development and training to increase diversity.

Resource Development

  • Coordinate and assist with fundraising for the United Way in organized workplaces.
  • Cultivate participation of Unions and community groups in new United Way campaigns.
  • Track and set goals for annual Union workplace campaign.
  • Follow up and provide recognition for Union volunteers and donors.

Community Advocate

  • Coordinate town hall meetings or worker summits around access to health care, school readiness, workforce development and basic needs.
  • Provide information to support and address public policy issues related to health and human services.

Qualifications:  Must be a member in good standing of a union affiliated with the AFL-CIO is required, general knowledge of organized labor with specific knowledge and understanding of the local labor movement and its community service programs, knowledge of the local voluntary sector in general, with specific understanding of the local United Way movement, strong communication, administrative and managerial skills and the ability to remain objective, nonpartisan, and professional when representing United Way of the Capital Region.

Salary Range: $45,000 – $56,000 based on experience

Grant Writer

United Way of the Capital Region is seeking a Grant Writer to research relevant and highly probable grant opportunities at the local, regional, state and federal levels. This position will write high-quality grant proposal narratives, applications, and supporting documents that result in awarded funds to support United Way programs and operations.

Work Schedule: This position will generally require 2 days/week or 16 hours/week but may vary contingent upon grant timelines and deadlines. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which may include early mornings, evenings and weekends. Must be available to meet with United Way staff when necessary for grant development during regular business hours, M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Essential Functions

  • Lead, operationalize & develop systems to support product development.
  • Raise revenue through grants.
  • Network and engage with local state and national funders.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify, cultivate and solicit new grants.
  • Launch & coordinate implementation of new grant activities.
  • Collect support data and information.
  • Write each grant in compliance with grant guidelines and framework.
  • Work with department managers to compile financials and data.

Position Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in grant writing; nonprofit experience a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, deadline-driven.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Clear, precise and compelling writing skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • High proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver license and reliable transportation.

Travel: Travel is minimal and would primarily be local during the business day.

Salary: $45/hour
