Jeff Myers LIVES UNITED By Mentoring Students
“Mr. Jeff, is my answer right?” Three voices excitedly speak at once as Jeff Myers helps third-graders Majistee, Narjis and Layne complete a math problem during their mentoring session at Downey Elementary School.
Jeff, a consulting actuary and partner at Conrad Siegel Actuaries, volunteers at Downey, located in the Harrisburg School District, about once a week. His visits are a highlight for the students. In fact, when he walks into Mr. Beeman’s class, the kids greet him with a warm and enthusiastic hello and ask to attend his mentoring session.
Jeff first connected with Downey Elementary School during the Bridges Society’s annual Barnes & Noble event. At this event, students are partnered with Bridges members to complete a scavenger hunt at Barnes & Noble and purchase a book to take home.
“The Barnes & Noble trip is the students’ favorite outing of the year,” says Mr. Beeman.

UWCR CEO Joe Capita Announces 2013 Retirement Date
Joseph M. Capita, whose leadership elevated United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) to unprecedented heights in raising funds and supporting regional human services, announced today he will retire soon after the completion of next fall’s fundraising campaign.
Capita, 62, said that while he has not yet made specific retirement plans, he intends to remain in the community and is committed to staying involved in “some meaningful way.”
“Our United Way is in a strong position. We just completed a strategic plan cycle, and our 15th consecutive successful campaign. I think it’s the right time for the organization, and the right time for me,” Capita said. “I want to allow enough time to assure a smooth and thoughtful transition. I am exceptionally proud of this organization and what we have accomplished, and I want to make certain UWCR has the opportunity to continue to build on what we have achieved.”
Capita, a central Pennsylvania native, returned to the region in 1995 to become UWCR’s president and CEO after serving as executive director of the Lycoming United Way for five years. Before that, he served as associate United Way executive director in Binghamton, NY; as director of planning at UWCR, and as director of Migration and Refugee Services for the Diocese of Harrisburg.

Prosperity Centers – Helping Families Get Back on Track
United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) understands that more and more families are living on the edge, and don’t know how to find a foothold. They want to become financially stable, but don’t know how. Our United Way has created a way to help people get back on track.
Through our Prosperity Centers, trained volunteers will help individuals and families learn to budget, plan for unexpected circumstances and manage their money. This is one of the real and tangible ways we improve lives in the Capital Region.
The Prosperity Centers have been made possible thanks to a $50,000 grant from PNC Community Development, a division of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., and a grant from the United Way Foundation of the Capital Region.
Helping families become financially stable is just one way, UWCR is making real difference in the lives of real people right here in our hometown.
